Anxiety is a word that for me had a stigma around it for a long time. I couldn’t tell other people that I struggled with it. Just saying that word to others in context of talking about me made me feel anxious. It can be a bit of an ambiguous word, and it’s not quite always easy to describe what it means. It can be hard to talk about your anxiety, because anxiety is hard. It can be embarrassing. It can be crippling and hard. And it can be hard to explain it to others who don’t know what you mean.
I wanted to share a few verses that I have really clung to through many seasons of anxiety and help others of you who also struggle with breaking that stigma and letting the light and beauty of God’s power wash over us even as we are weak by ourselves. In Him we can be strong.
But first I want to share what some of the things are that often make me anxious.
Not Performing Well Enough
Not Working ‘enough.’
Being a Dog Owner (Wanting to Be a Good One)
Even Anxiety over the Assurance of My Salvation
Having Too Many Plans in A Day
Saying ‘No’ to People
and the list could go on and on, but the point is that I SOO often focus on my own smallness and inability to handle things instead of looking at my Father in Heaven who has handled EVERY situation in my 25 years of life with His mighty power. There’s no problem that’s too small or too big for Him.
Psalm 46:10-11, ‘Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.’
Jeremiah 29:11-13, ‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.’
1 John 3:20, ‘For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.’
Proverbs 3:5-6, ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’
1 John 4:4, ‘Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: becausegreater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.’
Philippians 4:6-7, ‘Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’
There are ONE million things I could be anxious about, but there are ONE BILLION more ways (I’m excited when I use caps, not yelling at you), that God can and will and does work them out, and I know that me being anxious isn’t going to change them.
However, I didn’t want to be the only one talking about anxiety, because I have a precious friend Janie from Janie’s Got a Chicken and Live Healthy and Free on Instagram to talk about her own struggles and victories over anxiety. She did a really good series on her Instagram stories on ways to deal with anxiety from day to day, and I wanted her to share some on the podcast with you.
Janie and I talked about:
Dealing with the anxieties that confront you right when you wake up
Best ways to overcome anxiety
Why do we get anxious
How can we help others understand the things we’re anxious about instead of just hiding them
Why anxiety can come hand in hand with eating struggles
Why certain personalities may be more prone to anxiety
Why you can’t always tell that people are anxious and how to dig deeper
Finding people who will understand and help you work through the anxiety
The ultimate hope in Janie’s battle against anxiety
Janie and I laughed and bared our hearts. Janie seriously just overflows, and you can hear it in her voice. You can hear the struggles, but you can hear even more the victory.
I hope that you all know that you can come on here and you can talk about your struggles. I don’t want you to feel like you have to struggle alone. <3
Do you ever feel like anxiety or depression has a stigma around it? How do we break that?
