I’ve been thinking lately about how my posts are sometimes a big weighty, and sometimes you need time to digest the last heavy post before another deeper post.
TODAY, I’m going to go for a bit of a lighter, yet longer one and share some of the new foods/old foods/drinks that I’ve tried lately that I love (and I think you would love them too).
Also, if you endure to the end of this post, there is another NUT BUTTER giveaway at the end!
First of all, in recovery you have to learn that: Food is not the enemy.
I wrote this thought on Instagram yesterday, and I thought I would share it because I think that thinking ‘food is the enemy’ is one of the biggest roadblocks in recovery.
Food isn’t the enemy.
I was thinking about this on Thursday evening as I was hungry and started to think, ‘Should I eat or would that be bad?’ It was almost midnight, but I thought that God can bless food to my body whatever time of day it is, by His grace, and so I ate a handful of almonds and chocolate. It was yummy…
But you know what I learned?
The Devil would like us to believe that food, not sin and the devil, is our enemy. He is the king of lies. He comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy souls.
He wants us to worship the creature, the food, the perfect body, rather than the Creator of our bodies. And by nature, that’s what I do. I worship myself. I was dead in trespasses and sins.
The thing that strikes me everyday more and more is how proud I used to be about ‘being a Christian.’ Why would I be proud when I was like a dead person before Christ Jesus raised my soul from the dead?
I didn’t do anything. It all happened to me. Christianity isn’t something I took up. It’s something that took me up, and it’s changing me everyday. Jesus Christ is AMAZING, but I can only say that because of God’s mercy on me. Isn’t God’s mercy INCREDIBLE?
When God made the world, He called it good, and God made food.
So that means I can enjoy His abundance without my life swirling around food, right?
A life that is obsessed with food is miserable, and it’s been an amazing reminder everyday to be reminded that I’m not fighting food or my body anymore.
Ephesians 6:12 summarizes the Christian battle so well. ‘For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.’
The battle isn’t against the food. The devil is the enemy, and by God’s grace, I can resist the devil, and not the gift of food that God has given for me to enjoy Him and His provision.
So, what delicious eats have I been enjoying lately that I think you might enjoy?
Favorite Food # 1 – Kat’s Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins – These little bites of goodness taste really yummy and doughy just by themselves, BUT … you can never go wrong with some more nut butter.
Favorite Food #2 – Danielle’s AMAZING Sunday Morning Oats with Berry Compote – Berry Compote makes all the difference!
Favorite Food #3 – Siggi’s Yogurt with an Almond Perfect Bar (my VERY FAVORITE BARS) and walnut butter. God works in amazing ways everybody. I had really been wanting to try Siggi’s after seeing it on all my fave Instagrammer’s feeds, and then Farrah totally blew me away by sending me a coupon for one free cup of Siggi’s as a gift. Wow, this stuff seriously is thick, just like I like it.
Favorite Food #4 – Anything MEXICAN themed… Seriously I love Mexican so much, because the ease of making a taco salad bar is unrivaled especially when you’re in a pinch.
I’ve been eyeing Ashley’s Sweet Potatoes with a Mexican Flair and Rachel’s Vegan Taco Bowl because they correspond so much with my love for Mexican. :)) I will post pictures when I try them, Lord willing.
Yes, these are truly the ‘Perfect Bars.‘ I’ve tried RX Bars, Cliff Bars, Lara Bars, Power Bars, Luna Bars, and Square Bars, and I like all of them, but these ones really shine for my tastebuds.
They are soft, which is easy for my weak jaws. They are buttery, which gives them an amazingly smooth texture, and they are packed with superfoods and flavors.
They are expensive, so I was really thankful that the Lord provided a Perfect Bar sale last week, and we stocked up on 7 boxes. They’re not going to last very long around here.
Favorite Food #6 – More Nut Butters. . . I’m so thankful that God gave the gift of nut butter, because it seriously is a life saving, hunger satisfying food. You all who read the blog regularly know that I’ve kind of been on the quest to find the best nut butters in the States this year.
Some of my criteria for the nut butters was:
Sourced from the US (Pretty Important)
Taste (Tastes like the nut it represents with a depth of flavor) – (Pretty Important)
Texture (Nice to the tongue, not too big of chunks for ‘chunky’ and not super ‘gritty’ for smooth) – (Not as Important)
If you weren’t able to check out the last 3 posts I did reviewing about 10-12 different varieties you can find them at ‘The Quest for the Best Nut Butter’, ‘The Bestest Nut Butters‘, or the ‘Peanut Butter Lover’s Gift Guide.’
And you maybe won’t believe this but I’ve found more, so we’re going to give them a bit of air time and share the love for all of these tremendous companies I’ve discovered. It’s incredible that the U.S. has so much food variety, and I am so thankful that our country was based on a love for freedom that allowed people to invent and create some of the most unique businesses including the ‘nut butter business.’
A new nut butter has come down the pike. Bhappy is my very favorite crunchy peanut butter, but this might have to be my favorite ‘creamy nut butter.’
Alison sent me a jar of Naturally Nutty’s Pumpkin Seed Butter, and that was what caused me to think about reaching out to Naturally Nutty to see if I could do a review for them of more of their flavors. 🙂
I can’t wait to share my thoughts on these, but I’m already thinking that they are going to be amazing.
The company was started by a vegan mom in Michigan, a mom with a BIG dream, and it’s amazing to be able to be part of sharing that dream and nut butter love with others.
The incredible part is that all the nut butters have flax and hemp. She’s got 20 flavors, and she’s still coming out with more!
The description of the pumpkin seed butter that Alison gave me? It was buttery, full of sweet spice, SUPER smooth, and it drizzled so well on everything. It had a different depth of flavor that was totally unlike peanut butter.
Dana from Eats 2 Know is one of my BGB Community friends, and we did a ‘nut butter exchange’ a couple months ago. When I came home from Ireland, this sweet girl had sent me a bunch of the nut butters I had been wanting to try in a little package.
I reviewed the PB Crave she sent in a previous post, and she also sent some Wild Friends, a few packets of Once Again Nut Butter, one packet of Artisana, and a jar of Essentially Coconut.
What did I think about the different varieties?
Artisana was really different. I think the fact that it was raw gave it a really rich, deep, almost penetrating taste on my tongue. I liked it, but it wasn’t something my tongue liked quite as much.
It may have stung my tongue just a bit, and I’m thinking that may have been a semi-allergic reaction. However the flavor was really good, as I love walnuts. 🙂
Once Again Butters are smooth and simple. If you like smooth and simple, you will love them. They weren’t super different from other almond and cashew butters that I have had, but they are yummy and deliciously ‘drizzly.’
Essentially Coconut? – This coconut butter was … D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S. It mastered the coconut flavor, and when it’s really soft (because of summer heat) you can just scoop a spoon in and drizzle it over your oatmeal.
(A bowl of cereal with some of that coconut butter on top)
I realized that I do like about 50% flavored and 50% non flavored nut butters, so I’m guessing that’s why my favorite nut butters thus far have been:
These ones really stood out in the world of flavored nut butters. However your options are always open, as I’ve been thankful to be able to try others like
Buff Bake Butter
Justin’s Regular Almond Butter
Philosophie Coconut Butter
and good ole’ Kirkland Peanut Butter.
You know what the thing I’ve learned from all of this nut butter testing? There literally is an option out there for anybody. There is no one size fits all when it comes to nut butter.
One thing I do know is that I need Jesus Christ every day, but any added nut butter is just a tremendous blessing, by God’s tremendous grace and mercy.
Psalm 107:21-24, ‘Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.’
Favorite Food #7 – This truly tasty trail mix from Bethany and Rachel at Athletic Avocado. These gals surprised me with a little blogger encouragement package in which they included trail mix, granola, and one of their beautiful shirts with their blog logo on it.
This trail mix had white chocolate, cherries (I think), and walnuts, and boy was it good!
Favorite Drink? – I think it was probably the bloggers I know that got me wanting to try this. When I was at Sprouts, I picked up a bottle, because it was the cheapest sparkling water, and the verdict was? Delicious. The ingredients were also simple: Water and Natural Flavoring. 🙂
She’s honest about the struggle of small businesses, especially in the food industry. She has made me realize just how ungrateful and entitled of a mindset I’ve previously had about buying food.
For some reason I’ve gotten into the mode that I deserve to get ‘everything cheap.’
Wow, I am thankful that God used Nicole to convict me that I need to really appreciate all the work that small business owners put into their products. There is seriously so much love and care that goes into Blissful Eats Granola, and I could tell.
I ordered one bag of her Maple Nut Crunch and one bag of No Nutty Chocolate Chip, and they were by far the best granolas I have ever eaten, because they were so different.
I’m not going to be a spendthrift about food, but I’m not going to be an entitled cheapskate, by God’s grace anymore, and I truly desire to want to be more like my mommy and daddy who are always willing to pay more for a good product.
That’s why I’m trying to find more small companies, and there are a WEALTH of them out there. Each one has a different story about their love for providing wholesome, yummy food for people.
None of them seem like they are ‘in it for the money’ but 100% for loving people with their time, effort, and ingenuity.
Let’s hear it for the small business owners! I’m so thankful that God has used the Blissful Bites Podcast to cause me to be more grateful and open my eyes to the things I’ve never noticed before.
Some of my very favorite recent episodes from Nicole include but are not limited to:
1. Start Small But Think Big – Otto’s Cassava Flour
2. The Goal is to Change the Way America Bakes – Sweet Loren’s COOKIE DOUGH!
That was a long one. Hopefully you didn’t get too bored, BECAUSE I have now have a giveaway for one of my favorite foods. . .
