Having hope in the midst of suffering, I don’t believe, would be possible without Jesus Christ. When I’m struggling with an intense trial, the words of Jesus in John 16:33 come to mind.
I’m going to share the verse before it just to remind you of Jesus’ victorious mindset, even as He went to the greatest battle against sin and death and hell at the cross.
‘Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.’ (John 16:32-33)
Jesus told His disciples they would have trials. It’s not the prosperity gospel. This is the real gospel that gives you hope in the middle of the fire, a ROCK in the middle of the biggest storm.

The older I’ve gotten, the more trials life has held, and yet my hope has grown with the trials. I’ve realized that God has never left me in the middle of a trial, and I have seen nothing but His faithfulness, even when all human help runs cold.
One of my dearest new friends on Instagram, who is walking through intense physical suffering and trials with her mom having cancer right now, is Katie. Katie has severe chronic issues, auto-immune disease, and yet her Instagram pours out joy.
It’s not a superficial sort of joy. It’s deep joy. It’s joy that comes out of someone who has ‘never seen the righteous forsaken or begging bread.’
The mental suffering that was part of an eating disorder led to:
But Katie’s and my stories are stories that Jesus Christ is the ONLY One who can truly wash us with His blood and set the captives free from the chains that bind them.

John 16:33, ‘These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you a]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
2 Corinthians 10:3-5, ‘For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not a]carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.’
Philippians 1:5-6, ‘ for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.’
