Instagram is like a double edged sword that can breed food freedom and food comparison all in two different pictures right above each other or right next to each other. You can see a picture of a salad and think, ‘I haven’t had any greens today. I should… but they don’t sound good, but I should. But i Don’t want to.’ Seriously, I’ve had this battle in my head before. It’s not their fault for posting a salad, but for some reason, I’ve had that in my head for too long. Salad = healthy. Cookie = not healthy.
I’ve learned from Robyn and Sarah that it’s not as simple as that, and I’m thankful for their expert opinions on this; these women are so balanced. They see the beauty, the gift of comfort foods like doughnuts and mac n’ cheese and pizza and the delight of salads and smoothies and fruit. These women are the GOOD edge of the ‘double edged’ sword of Instagram. These are just a few of the women I follow and appreciate who have really reframed so much of my thinking around God’s gift of nourishment through so many different foods and forms of nourishing.
The Two Edges of the Sword are:
1) Instagram can really help promote a variety of foods, cookies, donuts, salads, roasted veggies, pizzas, lasagna, or (fill in the blank.)
2) However I have to be careful about the way I perceive and talk about certain foods. I find it so easy to ‘demonize’ foods because of my own struggles with idolizing food and idolizing the perfect diet. It’s easy to make others feel guilty about their food choices especially if I’m not aware of how I’m talking about them.
I realize that we NEED veggies and fruits and all the good fats and all the good carbs, and white bread and chocolate candies and chips definitely have a place in the regular everyday scheduled programming of eating.
That’s why I want to share a variety with you; honestly my salads don’t look nearly as … um… photogenic as most people’s (I’m not saying that out of jealousy; it’s just the truth, and so I don’t share very many salads on Instagram)
What have I been sharing on Instagram/eating lately?
So what have been the most recent delicious eats in the Emily Anne Swanson corner of the world?
God’s Gift of Chocolate Peanut Butter Baked Oatmeal through my friend Laura @ this amazing blog! – Has anybody thought about how photogenic nut butter is or am I just biased?
Baking my first two loaves of pretzel bread lead to a DELICIOUS slice covered in butter and jam. – I was amazed by how ‘pretzelish’ the bread tasted. I’m not sure how it gets the taste, but you can get the recipe from my girl Laura!
Enjoying the very first scoop of my Me Eat Paleo Chocolate Coconut Power from Mee on top of the rest of the baked oatmeal with BLUEBERRIES. I’m an ambassador for them, and I have a great affiliate discount code that you can use, ‘beautyinchrist.’
Simple cups of Siggi’s yogurt (strawberry & rhubarb is DA BOMB.com y’all!) with nut butter. – It’s amazing how the simplicity of nut butter swirled into yogurt can be one of the most under appreciated yet delicious snacks out there/2nd breakfasts.
Life has been good lately. I’ve been learning to say, ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to different things and measure out my energy. I tend to be a very scatter brained person who has a hard time focusing, but God is focusing my heart.
My prayer for this year really comes from a sermon I heard from C.H. Spurgeon from Psalm 119:117, ‘Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.’
I need God to hold me up or I’m just going to fail this year. But I know He will and He can. I’m excited for this year. I’m also super excited to share that going into the New Year I have a sweet fun ‘recovery foods’ giveaway going on on the Instagram, which you can enter here.
Here’s a snippet of what you’ll win:
A Jar of Nut Butter
A Mammoth Bar
Oatmeal Squares Cereal
I bought all of these products to share with you or found some of them in our family’s vast abundant pantry (we’ve been so blessed) to share with you all.) Go enter before midnight tonight!
Thank you so much Jenn and Laura for this WIAW! It’s been one of my favorite, chill, easy, fun linkups throughout 4 or 5 years of blogging.
