Thank you Naomi SOO much for all the beautiful photos!
Be still. God says this so many times to His people in the Word when they’re distressed, when things seem TERRIBLE. Exodus 14:14 is a verse that I’ve often meditated on this year as I’ve wrestled with anxiety, anxiety over not doing enough, anxiety over not pleasing people, and this verse has kept me rooted and grounded in learning to be still before the Lord. Exodus 14:14, ‘The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.’ God will fight for you. Often times I act like I’m the one who has to do all the fighting. I act like it all DEPENDS on me, and then I’m crushed by the weight of all of it. That’s why I wanted to wrap up 2017’s podcast episodes with this encouragement.
Be Still. Know that God is God. You aren’t God. God is in control.
Naomi, one of my very favorite recovery and mental health bloggers, wrote on this a little while ago, and I thought that she would be a wonderful interview to have on this topic.
I thought it was so appropriate especially after I saw a news headline this morning that read, ‘Americans More Stressed Out Than Ever.’
Why are we so stressed out? I think it’s because we depend too much on ourselves, and we’ve wandered away from Jesus, wandered away from God and His sovereignty over all of life.
Psalm 37:7, ‘ Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!’
In the podcast Naomi talked about:
- Ways to Be Still
- Things we Miss When We aren’t Being Still
- Being Mentally Still Even When We are Busy
- The Value of A Slow Walk
- Why It’s Important to Just Walk Slowly and Maybe Not Listen to A Podcast
- People Who Have Taught Her About Learning to Be Still
- Why Being Still For Naomi Was A Problem of Forgetting Where Her Identity Lies
- Why A Summer of Being Still Taught Naomi So Much
Naomi talked about an author and a podcast that she really loves when it comes to being still in a fast paced world, when it comes to slowing down in a world that seems to keep moving at breakneck speed.
The author she mentioned:
Emily P Freeman
The Podcast She Mentioned:
There is so much value in being still. There is so much value in slowly walking, stopping to listen to the stillness of the day, stopping to think about how Jesus Christ came to make men’s hearts be at PEACE with God, at peace with themselves and other people.
There is so much value in listening to the chirps of birds, in listening to the giggles of children, in hearing the quiet tick of a clock, knowing that God is ordaining each second.
Jesus walked with God in stillness. Jesus went away to be quietly alone with His Father. And as a follower of Jesus I can listen and follow my Lord. I can be still in His presence, knowing that He’s working even when I’m asleep.
God is Good. God is working. God is Faithful .
Our identities aren’t in what we do. They are in being made in God’s image. When Jesus saves you from your sins, your identity is in Him, and nothing can change that.
Even if You Don’t Get the To Do List Done
Even If You Have to Lay in Bed All Day
Even If You Need to Spend All Day With People and Not Make Money
This was SUCH a precious podcast. I am so small, but my God is SO BIG. He is always working. He is always doing something even when I have to be still.
May you learn to be more still and know that He is God in the New Year!
Please leave any thoughts you have or lessons you’ve learned in the past year!
