Icecream. It’s a major fear food for those struggling with eating disorders. To a normal person with a normal diet, it might not be a big deal, but when you start to see certain foods as ‘enemies’ and other foods as ‘not enemies’ ice cream becomes one of the enemies.
It was a major fear food for me, and I still struggle at times with people serving me ice cream, especially because I can’t ‘control’ how much I eat. Now, I have it at least once a day, and I love the freedom of being able to have that icecream without worrying about the calories.
I still often obsess over controlling my own portions, and it’s tough to let someone else serve it for me.
One Sunday a while ago, we were having dessert. Someone was serving the ice cream. Let’s just say that ‘teenage boy’ portions and ‘female’ portions differ… a lot, and my little heart rate started going up and up and up. . .
But, I decided I had to NOT worry and be anxious for nothing, and instead in the strength and might of Christ, I could let the person serve me ice cream. I am incredibly grateful that the perfect love of God does cast out the fear that has torment.
The bowl was HUGE. Inwardly, I freaked out a bit, but I decided this was another opportunity to step out in faith, a gift from God.
By God’s grace, He gives faith to the weakest and faintest of heart in the most fearful situations to overcome in the power of the Lamb, and I saw this happen that day over a bowl of ice cream.
Since that day, this verse has been one of my verses that I have repeated over and over to myself when my heart seizes with fear over eating food.
Romans 14:23, ‘But the person who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not act in faith; and anything that is not done in faith is sin. But the man who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not do so from faith, and whatever is not from faith is sin.”
Psalm 103:2-5, ‘Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.’
A question I have to ask myself a lot when I’m afraid of eating a certain food is:
Am I doing this in faith or fear?
The whole question in my mind is: Are rich desserts ‘unhealthy?’
God created cream. He also created sugar cane. I ate sugar cane when I was in Uganda, and actually, this is funny, but it was too sweet for my tastebuds. Isn’t that weird?
God is good. He is the essence of goodness, therefore His creation is good.
Psalm 31:19, ‘Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee;which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!’
1 Timothy 4:4, ‘For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,’
I know that this is true, and that means that ice cream is not a bad food. It’s actually a very good food.
God made everything for His glory. As a redeemed soul, blood bought by the Lord Jesus Christ, I can eat even ice cream and cookies for His glory. Everything I eat can be sanctified to His praise. I can give thanks for everything from His gracious hand including ice cream, salad, cookies, and cake.
So then why am I sometimes when eating ice cream?
Am I worried that God doesn’t bless food to my body? Am I not trusting Him that He made everything good and that He can and does by His mercy enable my body to process food?
That Sunday was a test for me. Was I going to trust God and stop obsessing over the size of the bowl?
By His incredible, infinite strength, He overcame the fear in me of this little mountain, and I ate it, wondering at the fact that my Heavenly Father never stops teaching me to trust Him totally in every situation.
Let me tell you. That was a delicious bowl of ice cream. It took me back to just how good God is and that EVERY good gift comes from above.
Why should we enjoy ice cream instead of fearing it? I’m going to give you some reasons I made up.
Four Reasons to Enjoy Icecream
Reason #1 – Icecream tastes GOOD, and God marvelously designed our brains to create tons of different ice cream recipes. Not one ice cream tastes exactly the same. I have not met anyone who doesn’t like ice cream.
I’ve met people who don’t like cake or even cookies or pie, but I have yet to meet someone who says that they don’t care for ice cream. It’s a universally loved dish, and I thank God for the gift of ice cream.
It even goes well in these ‘Birthday Cake Cookie’ Icecream Sandwiches.
Reason #2 – There are SO many flavors, and it’s a way of tasting and rejoicing in God’s variety and His absolute infinite creativity and beauty.
We are really blessed and privileged in the US to have the blessing of going to the store and picking out of hundreds of flavors and types. Some of my favorite flavors are:
Peanut Butter Cup (Breyers)
Mint Chocolate Chip (Any Kind)
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (Breyers)
Vanilla (Blue Bell)
Reason #3 – It’s social, and it’s a wonderful way of slowing down and savoring each moment with your precious family and friends. I kind of include fro-yo, as being ‘similar’ to icecream, not the same, but similar, and I have had so many fro-yo dates with friends.
Making memories over bowls of frozen yogurt and ice cream are invaluable, and I can recount so many good conversations, times of prayer, and laughter that I’ve had with friends over a cup of frozen yogurt.
Psalm 34:8-10, ‘O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.’
Reason #4 – Last but not least, nothing tastes better than a bowl of ice cream right before a workout to fuel you with a nice ‘sugar rush.’ I’m not sure I recommend the health benefits of it as a pre-workout snack, but it sure is tasty.
Tonight, are you going to worry about the size of the ice cream bowl or enjoy the beauty of God’s sunsets…
