America is one of the most health and nutrition and fitness obsessed countries that I’ve ever visited. I don’t say that to just be a cranky person, but I say it because I think it strikes to the core of why so many girls and boys struggle with body image, anorexia, orthorexia, bulimia, (you name the disorder)…. I’ve always wondered why? Why is it that one of the countries with the most wealth, the most access to food, to health treatment, exercise classes, restaurants and such, has one of the largest populations of people purposely starving themselves?
We try to make ourselves happy with stuff, food, experiences, new clothes, but stuff doesn’t make you happy. Neither does food. Purpose and a relationship with Jesus has made me happy, and it’s the only thing that has been steady in my ups and downs with eating, exercise, and just life in general. These other things are gifts that point us back to the Giver, the Maker, the Creator, and they cause us to rejoice in all that He has bestowed on us.
Obsessions with fitness will only feed discontent. An obsession with Jesus? That will set you on fire. A margarita won’t sustain a life or a vigor inside you, but the LOVE, the MERCY, the AWESOME JUSTICE, the KINDNESS, and the presence of God the Father will fill you with vigor and life.
Take your eyes off the ‘Self’ Magazine. Throw away the ‘Bikini body’ magazines and focus on Jesus. He will give you so much more joy. The days I spend trying to compare myself with others, carefully obsessing over my calories, worrying about my ‘sugar’ intake, counting the hours till my workout, I’m miserable, absolutely miserable. The days I’m reminded of who I am in Christ and only by the virtue of His blood, I am encouraged and strengthened. Look on Jesus. Hebrews 12:2 says, “2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
May you be strengthened by His love, His mercy, His declaration that we are not guilty of all of our sin in the court of heaven, and may the world and all it’s pressures fade away as a result.
Just thinking… What are your thoughts? Do you agree?
Do you disagree? In a kind way. 🙂
