I came to this startling realization as part of recovering from an eating disorder. ‘My body isn’t really mine.’ I mean. I know I take care of it, but it’s not ‘mine to abuse, to starve, or beat up…’ It’s not just my possession, to do with it what I want, and that’s how I treated it. I had forgotten the truth of my identity.
That’s what I’m going to delve into today, while interspersing my ‘Tuesday’ eats plus a lot of the goodies I’ve been making for my family. I have literally been a BAKING machine, which is so fun.
That’s the biggest thing that I’m learning, still, after 7 years of struggling with worshipping this body, worshipping this idol, that my body was to me.
I was putting this idol before me like I owned it. I was a ‘bad owner.’ I was a really bad owner.
Hw much more precious it was to realize that I was bought, adopted by a merciful Father, who saved me while I was still His enemy, lost in sin and darkness?
Ephesians 2:1-6, ‘And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:’
Tuesday’s Lunch: – The Best Caesar Salad ever. Any food tastes so good when you are hungry and traveling.
I didn’t deserve to be adopted by God, but that’s what makes the grace of God REALLY amazing and indescribable.
It’s like when someone loves you, and you totally don’t expect it, and you are just STAGGERED. You don’t even know what to say. That’s what His love is like.
Look at these verses from Romans 11:30-36, ‘For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.’
Paul was reminding the Romans not to despise the Jews who had, at that time fallen away from the faith, because God can have mercy on who He wants to have mercy. It’s not conditional love. It’s unconditional love. It’s love that I want to share with you!
Tuesday’s Breakfast: The best chocolate muffin ever with Sun-Butter, honey Greek yogurt, and banana!
(Rachel at ‘Simplific Life’ posted this AMAZING, DELICIOUS, Fudgy chocolate muffin recipe that is completely dairy and gluten free but DEFINITELY not taste free. I would attribute the taste to the amazing amounts of nut butter and yummy honey that went into it.)
That is the wonderful thing about recovery. I realized that it wasn’t something I deserved, but God gave it by His mercy. I can’t claim His mercy, but I can be grateful for it.
God made each person. Each of you who comes and read this blog MATTERS, because God made you. And even if you don’t know Him, He can adopt you and sweep you up into the truth of His great love.
- This great love wasn’t cheap. It’s not something that is ‘sold’ as love on the movies in Hollywood. It’s deep and wide and broad and high.
- That’s why I take care of this body. I’m the child of my Father. I can’t abuse it and starve it, because He made it to be used for His glory.
- That means I can nourish this body. If there are times I go without food, I don’t do it to make the ‘perfect body’ but when I eat again, it’s wonderful to be able to fuel my body because God made me and bought me and adopted me and made me His child.
And glory is what? It’s GLORIOUS. It’s not the torture and the fear of the devil. It’s glory. It’s glory that surpasses the trials. It’s the GLORY of God that is so unspeakable and so amazing that it presses me not to walk back into that eating disorder.
If you don’t know the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, I pray that you might know this deep love, this mercy, and grace that holds you in the STORMS, the sovereign hand of a Father that is the strong tower to which a frail heart can run, and the promise, the fountain of eternal life that Christ brings.
Tuesday Snack Time: Some of my ‘super duper travel snacks’ from my friends at Rawxies... These things are like little heart shaped ‘Larabars’, but the flavors are very unique/good.)
I’m not throwing it on you or forcing it at you, but it is TOO wonderful not to share this with you, and I want you all to know that I do love you, and I want to continue to share His love with you. <3
Dinner Time: (Thankful for plane food and that it comes with the flight… I can’t complain at all. Braised Beef Stew, a roll with real Irish butter, fruit salad, and a cucumber salad made for a well-rounded ending to the night!)
How do we nourish these bodies? Well, the thing I love about the ‘WIAW’ link-ups with Arman (The Big Man’s WORLD!), Laura (Sprint 2 The Table), and Jenn (Peas and Crayons), is that it looks DIFFERENT for everybody. Through blogging I have found friends that are always making me think about the way I eat in a non-judgmental sort of way, and I have learned and continue to learn from them. They don’t trigger me at all, but rather, they inspire me to learn more about God’s creation of food and how to use it best for His glory.
(Emilie at Emilie Eat’s has this ‘amazing-sauce’ ‘Peanut Butter Chocolate Chickpea Protein Balls.’) You will love them, I guarantee.)
You will have:
I think of Ellie and Leah, who share thoughtful discourses on ‘veganism’ and delicious vegan recipes. They share thoughts that have really made me think and ponder the way we take care of God’s creatures in this world and His creation. Do we care for it in a righteous, godly way that would glorify God, the Maker of this world? If God cares for His little sparrows, do we care for His little sparrows in a kind way or a cruel way? These girls will spark those thoughts in your head too.
Most of us are omnivores, and each girl and guy shows incredible sensitivity towards the way each other eats. That’s an incredible gift, because this area of eating, I believe, according to what Paul says in Romans 14 and Colossians is an area of liberty, one which isn’t the center of our lives, but one that should be thought about in a caring, kind, and gentle way.
(Kat even inspired me to make my version of breakfast nachos with her breakfast nacho recipe! I added cheese.)
And you’ll have all sorts of variations in between, which is why this is such a fun link-up. You can get ideas, learn nutrition tips from Sarah at Bucket List Tummy R.D., and be stimulated to great thought about eating after struggling with an eating disorder from Kate or Aubrey. You can go to Michelle’s and kind of do a ‘drool-fest’ over her Paleo creations and wish that you could eat at her house everyday for her epic ‘breakfast hash’ bowls. You can visit Alyssa and find the BEST’est’ gluten free food on the East Coast.
I really could go on and on, but that’s why I link-up. A few years ago, I may have felt pressure to ‘have the same diet,’ but I have realized that God gave us liberty in this area. As a human being, I’m often so much more ‘justice’ minded and ‘straight laced’ about little things like food than the Scriptures are, and I am so thankful that God gave His precious Word to keep me balanced and remind me what really matters.
What matters is the relationships we are building with each other on these link-ups, the things we are learning from each other, and most of all, to me, the ways I can just marvel at all the amazing gifts of food and friendship that He gives. 🙂
And the coolest thing? We all love dessert. Ok, that’s a little ‘small’ but my fellow blogger’s love for different kinds of desserts has inspired me to create a few dessert recipes in the past few weeks like these ‘Gooey Sunflower Bars.’
That is why I do the WIAW link-up…
Why do you do the ‘WIAW’ link-up other bloggers?
If you’re not a blogger, but you like hopping from WIAW to WIAW, what is your favorite part about it?
Do you feel pressure, ever, to make your diet look like another person’s just to fit in?
Why would you say that it’s important to care for the body?
How can you show the body you have grace?
